For the past few mornings a verse has been going through my head & this morning, I HAD to take a closer look at it. 2 Peter 1:3 states:

His divine power has given us everything we need for life & godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory & goodness.”

The power that He gives us is His very own power. It is that which is uniquely His & proceeds from Him. (New Testament Lexical Aids). He so desires for us to walk & live our lives in godliness that He gives us the very means by which we can accomplish this very thing. This power is “achieving power” (NTLA). God gives us His power with a purpose in mind, to achieve something. He is a God that is looking to achieve something in & through our lives. That word “given” is a strong word meaning to “grant or bestow” & when something is bestowed, it is given as a gift to be used. We obtain all this through our “knowledge of Him”. This is not to be a head knowledge only. It is to be a knowledge that engages our heart, that “which perfectly unites the subject with the object” (Vine’s) meaning that it unites us with Him.

I loved how this verse states that we have been called to this. If ever we wondered what we have been called to, Peter states it so clearly – we have been called to know Him so deeply, so intimately that our lives are united with Him so as to live in a way that we reflect Him. “God’s call is effective, awakening & creating faith.”(New American Commentary). It is ongoing. It is not something just done in the past. It is not just something that occurs only today. It is ongoing. Ever happening.

Having always struggled with my own lack of education or I should say, lack of any degree, this verse brings me a certain comfort & freedom this morning. I read this quote that probably sums it all up:

“It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them – the character, the heart, generous qualities, progressive ideas.” Feodor Dostoevesky

May I come to rely solely on His divine power & knowledge of Him as it is all that I need for life & godliness.
