Wednesday was the day that “The Oprah Show” ended. I have nothing against Oprah. I was not a follower either. My feelings towards her are rather neutral – neither hot nor cold. I guess my issue with her started when I became aware that so many women were following her & following her advice as if she were a “god”. Women were hanging on her every word. She has probably been “tivo’ed” more than one would believe.

This afternoon I read this headline on the internet:

“For some, losing ‘Oprah’ will be painful. A study finds that serious fans of TV shows experience real sadness & loneliness when their beloved show ends.”

Serious? Yes, the article was quite serious. It brought to mind the verse from Jeremiah 10, that says,

“Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk.”  (verse 5).

We cannot look to Oprah to speak to us what only God can speak to us. We cannot expect Oprah to lead us in the way that only God can lead us. It is futile. It will prove empty every time. As we pursue God, we will find satisfaction & meaning & purpose that only He can bring to our lives. Psalm 63: 3-4 says,

“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you, I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.”

The result?

“I will be satisfied as with the richest of foods.”  (verse 5)

May we seriously guard our hearts & keep from giving any idol a place in our lives. Today may we say:

“My whole being follows hard after You and clings closely to You; Your right hand upholds me.” (Psalm 63: AMP).
