Change. It can be a hard concept some days. We can be such creatures of habit, of the familiar. I don’t even move my furniture around very often. I can leave it situated the same because there is a certain comfort derived from familiarity. That way nothing goes bump in the night – mostly me – when I get up 🙂 At times, I find myself even fighting the thought of change. I often will struggle to find a way to leave things the way they were, status quo. But lately I am questioning if this is really a good way to live. Even if it is healthy. I am beginning to think not.
Change….Dictionary defines it as:
- to make the form, nature, content, future course, of (something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone
- to transform or convert
- to substitute another or others for; exchange for something else
I think a good way to describe change can then be to say that it is a metamorphosis of sorts, a transformation. I like that thought. It means that we are being changed into what we should be. We are being moved towards a new direction that is meant for specifically for each of us. It means that God loves us too much to leave us alone.
The confidence that we can have in this process is that it is not a random change that is taking place in our lives. We can trust the One who is making the changes in our lives. Acts 17:26 tells us:
“And he (God) determined the times set for them & the exact places where they should live.”
That word “determined” means “to mark out definitely.” It is a determination being made in relation to sovereign divine purpose & intent.(Expository Dictionary of Bible Words).
No randomness there. He knows exactly where we need to be in life in order to continue to change & fulfill His will for our lives.
This morning I am realizing that left to myself, I would not change. I would stay with the familiar. I would stay in my routine. And left to myself, I would remain unchanged. Yet change is what our God has called us to do. Constantly. Continually. From the day we are born till we see His face, we are in the process of change. This morning I am reminded that there is only one way to embrace change. As Corrie ten Boom so eloquently stated:
“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”
