Have you ever noticed all the expressions we use that have to do with our heart? Seriously…..here is just a sampling:

  • A man after my own heart
  • My heart is broken
  • It does my heart good
  • Eat my heart out
  • From the bottom of my heart
  • Heart & Soul
  • A heart of gold
  • Young at heart
  • We take something to heart
  • (and my personal favorite)…We can have our heart either in our boots, in our mouth or in the right place, LOLOL.

The one my mind has been consumed with is the phrase “set your heart”. In Psalm 16:8 we are told,

“I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

“To set” in this sense means to agree with, to put in place. Bottom line? I agree with God about the rightful place He should have in my life & I make sure to put Him there & keep Him there. The result is that no matter what comes my way in life, “I will not be shaken”. I especially like the way the New English Version puts it:

“I constantly trust in the Lord; because he is at my right hand, I will not be upended.”

We do not tend to use that word very often. Upended. The easiest way to explain that is – bottom’s up. Now there is a word picture for us!!! Better yet, let me give you a picture of upended –

We always want to stay with our feet firmly planted on the ground & the only way to do that is to be sure to have the Lord set before us. The manner in which I set things will greatly determine the course of my day. Do I want to be upended or firmly planted?
