Ever been stuck on the same verse or with the same thought for days or weeks on end? That is where I am finding myself off & on over the last few weeks.

I have been reading Matthew Chapter 5 for days now. OK, really for about 3 weeks. Today I read a familiar passage from The Message. It says:

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.”

So here are the thoughts that hit me as I read that:

  1. Jesus called me (us) to be the salt of the earth. The expression, “the salt of the earth” is used to describe a person of great kindness, reliability or honesty. (according to the Oxford Dictionary of Idioms).
  2. Salt is a preservative. But to work, it must come out of the salt shaker. It will only take effect after it is rubbed onto something. Are we rubbing shoulders with those around us? What effect are we having?
  3. Salt makes us thirsty. Ever eat salty potato chips or salty pretzels? They make you drink water like nobody’s business! We are to make others aware of Christ due to being in our company.

If w are not interacting with those around us then how will they benefit from the effects of our being “salty”? Salt is probably the most common of all seasonings. Yet it is in & through the common that others will be able to see & desire the uncommon, Jesus.

In that verse above, it says that we are here to be the salt-seasoning in a dying world. So—-how salty are you today?
