Last night one of my family members came in & sat down on the couch next to me. In a few minutes, I said, “You smell just like ___________(insert name of another person).” Now don’t get this wrong. It was a nice smell. A pleasant aroma from a cologne or perfume. And it reminded me of the person who usually is wearing it.

“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.” (2 Corinthians 2:14 NIV).

The Message words it:

“And I got it, thank God! Because of Christ, we give off a sweet scent rising to God, which is recognized by those on the way of salvation-an aroma redolent with life.”

In this verse, the impact that we have on others is compared to a recognizable aroma. After we leave a room, we should leave behind us an awareness of Christ. Much like a scented candle creates atmosphere, so should our presence do the same in a group. Think of it this way:

As you enter a room, a home – do you create an atmosphere of joy? Light? Kindness? Love? Or does the temperature in a room suddenly chill? Does stress fill the room? Jealousy? Rivalry? One way or another, you are creating an atmosphere. Think of yourself as a walking & talking Yankee Candle. Only you can decide what aroma you will leave behind.
