I want to share about a book I am reading.

Made To Crave by Lysa TerKeurst.

Oh sure, it appears to be a book about food & diets. But truly it is so much more than that. I want to share an excerpt that addresses some verses from Psalm 78:

“God did miracles……verse 12.

He divided the sea and led the people through it…..verse 13.

He guided them…….verse 14.

He brought water out of dry places……verses 15-16.

He gave the Israelites everything, but they forgot.

They continued to sin against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High. They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved…..When the LORD heard them, he was very angry. (verses 17-18, 21).”

These verses “address inappropriate cravings & the reality of how God feels about them.” (pages 173-174 of the above mentioned book).

The author goes on to define inappropriate cravings as “whatever pulls our hearts away from God” (page 174).

Let’s face it – cravings demand immediate attention. Cravings do not let us have room to think about whether they are beneficial or not. The eternal can be robbed by the momentary. And it is not only food that can be a craving.

It can be food. But it can also be….

        relationships

             attention

                  shopping

                       the internet

                            alcohol

                                 prescription meds

                                       romance novels

an emotion – anger, bitterness, unforgiveness

You get the point – whatever pulls our heart away from God. And that can be just about anything although it varies from person to person.

If we have walked with God in our lives for any length of time, we have experienced what He can do in our lives. As the author states:

“God has worked miracles.

I’ve been led through the impossible.

He’s guided me.

He’s brought living water to replace my dried-up places.

He’s given me everything & I don’t want to forget.” (page 174).

May we, too, not forget. May we choose wisely when that craving comes calling our name. May we not be robbed of the eternal for that momentary pleasure. Nothing is worth the joy of the eternal.

Nothing.
