I need to return to Moses one more time. I have not been able to let go of this chapter all week. We left Moses at the burning with God seeing Moses & now God calls to him. God doesn’t just call out to him, He calls him by his name!

“God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” (Exodus 3:4 NIV).

Why does this amaze me? He has done the same for me….

“But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not,  for I have redeemed you;  I have called you by your name; You are Mine.”           (Isaiah 43:1 NKJV).

He has called each one of us by our own individual names. How amazing a thought! He is not a “Hey you God” but is very specific in calling us.

What happens next gives us a very clear picture of our God. He warns Moses not to come closer. To take off his sandals as the place where he is standing is holy ground           (Exodus 3:5).

God does the same for us today:

“I will instruct and teach you about how you should live.” (Psalm 32:8 NET)

God then identifies Himself to Moses telling him, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” (Exodus 3:6).

God does the same for us today. He identifies Himself as our Father:

“And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.  Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child.  And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.” (Galatians 4:6, 7 NLT).

God then tells Moses that He has seen all that His people have gone through. He tells Moses that He is concerned for them. And He offers a promise & hope for the future.

God does the same for us today:

”For I know what I have planned for you,’ says the Lord. ”˜I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you a future filled with hope.”                                     (Jeremiah 29:11 NET).

May we learn from this encounter four truths:

  1. God calls us each by our name
  2. God warns & instructs each of us that are His
  3. God identifies Himself & establishes relationship with us
  4. God offers us promise & hope
