Pastor continued teaching this past Sunday in the Ephesians series. It has been great. I have already shared with a friend what I learned from his message on Sunday. I have been reading the chapter each day & I still hold to the fact that it has to be a challenge to pick a short passage to preach on. This is another very full & rich chapter.

Given the choice of being dead or alive, I think I know what most of us would pick.

The truth is that this passage in Ephesians tells us that we were dead.

“Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.”            (Ephesians 2:1 NLT).

No matter what version you would use, you would still be – dead.

That word in the Greek means, “dead, useless. Spiritual death, separated from the life-giving grace of God or more distinctly, having one’s soul separated from the enlivening influences of the divine light & Spirit & consequently having no hope of life eternal.A life unprofitable.” (New Testament Lexical Aids).

We were at one time without the influence of God’s Spirit in our lives. No hope of eternal life. No hope of His Spirit energizing us each day to live to the fullest. Our lives would be empty, unprofitable, fruitless.

Thankfully, we have not been left to live this way. We have been given a choice….

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions”“it is by grace you have been saved.”  (Ephesians 2:4, 5 NIV).

By His grace we have been offered the gift of salvation. Out of the richness of His mercy, He has made us alive.

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10b NIV).

See, we were once dead. But He has made us alive.

He has more for us. More for us to do. To fulfill.
