Lately I have been doing some thinking about our hearts. Heart issues can be either physical (the health of one’s heart), spiritual (the condition of our relationship with God) or emotional (how we are dealing on issues with others). Any one of these areas can be of concern to us. And they should. I should take note of the condition of my heart in all three of these areas.

But what about when the heart that I am concerned about is not my own?

                                Enter Proverbs 21:1……..

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord; he (the Lord) directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases”

Did you catch who is holding the king’s heart?

Did you catch where He is holding it?

Did you catch who is directing it & in control?

The Lord is holding, the Lord is directing. At all times. In all situations.

Often a situation arises where we become aware of a heart change that needs to be affected. It may be in an employer, a boss, a supervisor, my child’s teacher, or (gasp!!) perhaps my husband. How often I can go about thinking that I can be the one that directly can cause that change to happen. I can plead, beg, bargain, cry, coerce, manipulate (yeah, now it is getting ugly), pressure & all to no avail.

Ah, but what if, just what if, I was to remember Who is holding that heart?

What if, instead of endeavoring to cause change to happen, I was to pray to the only One that can make those changes? What if instead of spinning my wheels & wasting my energy, I invested my energy into praying about that heart change? What would happen then?

Would I see that teacher become more caring?

Would I see that employer become more favorable toward my loved one?

Would that supervisor become less overbearing?

Would God move on my husband’s heart & change him?

Would God bring my husband through a heart procedure with a good report?

“Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”Â  (Matthew 19:26  NIV).

Or worded another way?

“Jesus looked hard at them and said, “No chance at all if you think you can pull it off yourself. Every chance in the world if you trust God to do it.” (in The Message).

How good is that!!!!!

                                          No chance vs every chance

Which would you rather?

Seems like an obvious answer until I remember how often I take matters, or in this case – hearts, into my own hands. How much more effective it would be to bring it all before God in prayer & trust Him to do what I have no chance of doing!

Well I have some praying to do regarding a heart change & it is mine that needs the changing!

Lord, give me a heart that will trust You to do what I can never do. Amen.
