I have always enjoyed watching “60 Minutes”. They had interesting story lines. It was impossible to watch the program & not learn, not be stretched, not be challenged. But I have to say, my favorite segment of the program was truly those last few minutes given over to Andy Rooney. One never knew what he would discuss or complain about. Sure, he made us laugh. But then I think we could always identify with what he was complaining about.

Sunday night I watched 60 Minutes. The last few minutes were dedicated to Andy Rooney. This time, not because he was retiring, but because he had passed away. He had last appeared on 60 Minutes October 2, 2011. During that final episode, he was asked what would he do if he could do it all over again. His answer was basically that he would live his life exactly as he had, doing what he had done, writing on 60 Minutes. He loved what he was doing. That is why he did it to the age of 92.

As much as I loved watching his editorials each week, I think this last interview was probably the segment I will always remember. It said so much of the grumpy man with the bushy eyebrows that seemed to complain about anything & everything.

It said that he loved life.

As I have thought on this since watching 60 Minutes yet again last night, this verse came to me today:

“Teach us to realize the brevity of life,so that we may grow in wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12 NLT).

It is as we count our days, realizing our own mortality, that we live wisely. In that wisdom, we learn to make each day count. We realize that as long as we are drawing breath, we have purpose. And we live to fulfill that purpose, no matter our age.

So this is dedicated to the cantankerous old man, Andy Rooney, who entertained me, gave me things to laugh about & think about, who reminded me to be thankful for today.
