This morning I ripped a page off my calendar in order to read today’s verse. It is such a familiar & comforting action each morning. Usually. This morning? Not so much. With each page torn, I am coming to the end of this calendar. I realized that this particular year, this calendar, has been a good friend. It delivered many a timely message, in a single verse. Soon there will no longer be a page to tear off. I will just throw away what will be left of it – the stand.

See, I never buy a perpetual calendar. You know which one I mean. The one you keep flipping through, until at the end, it simply would start over. I always get a calendar with the tear off & discard kind of pages. Why? I want a new verse each day.

As I thought of this, a Scripture came to mind:

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double”‘edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”Â  (Hebrews 4:12 NIV).

His Word is living & active. It is a fresh word each day.

  •   “Living”””> “living water, having vital power in itself and exerting the same upon the soul” (taken from Strong’s). God’s Word has a vital power – vital for living, vital to our life. Not only does it have this life in itself but it exerts that power upon each soul that reads it. He brings to life, causes life to spring in our soul (the place of our personalities & emotions).
  •   “Active”””> effectual (again taken from Strong’s). It is strong & efficient to accomplish what it must.”The word of God contains a potency which when unleashed successfully accomplishes its purpose, or more intensely what gets results & can actualize or realize things.” (from Key Word Bible, New Testament Lexical Aids).

No wonder my calendar is so precious to me. Each morning, there appears a fresh word. It is ready to breathe life into me, into my day. It is an accomplishing word because it is God’s Word. He speaks to accomplish. He is results-oriented in the lives of His children.

Oh, that we would open His Word each day. Let it do the work that only God’s Word can do – a spiritual surgery – each day. May we let it cut away that which is not of His will in us. May we let it uncover hidden agendas, hidden emotions, hidden thoughts & attitudes & free us to walk in His ways.

Calendars. Who knew they had so much to say 🙂
