The last day of 2011. But then, if you have been watching TV at all, you would have been reminded of that within each commercial break. There are countless commercials:
- to make donations to rescue dogs, cats & whales
- to make donations to feed the hungry
- to join fitness clubs
- to join weight loss clubs, systems, etc.
- to buy that new car
But it is the last day of this year. We will either look back on this past year with a big sigh of relief that it is over (and we made it through) or with a big smile that it was a great year. We will look forward to the new year with either dread (will the new year be just like the old one?) or anticipation (what new things are in store?).
No matter our thoughts, today we will all be looking back & looking forward.
How do we do this? How do we look both back & forward, almost at the same time & deal with the wide realm of emotions that it brings to us?
REST.
- the refreshing quiet or repose of sleep: a good night’s rest.
- refreshing ease or inactivity after exertion or labor: to allow an hour for rest.
- relief or freedom, especially from anything that wearies, troubles, or disturbs.
- a period or interval of inactivity, repose, solitude, or tranquility: to go away for a rest.
- mental or spiritual calm; tranquility
Â
So here is to 2012 – may it be the year of rest!
“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29 NLT).
