Yesterday was the day we headed back into our routine – getting up early, school, work, school pick-ups, etc. Yes, Christmas vacation came to an end. With that, a semblance of order was resumed.

I picked Sophia up from school. We drove home & after a few minutes, I put her in for a nap. All normal routine. However, what was different was that Lisa came to pick her up, slightly earlier. This left us with no play time together after her nap. Her response?

The saddest meltdown to date. I could have just cried along with her. All she wanted to do was to stay with me, her Mimi, & play.

  • “I didn’t do nothing!” (meaning we didn’t get to play anything together).
  • “I don’t want to go home yet.”
  • “I want to stay at Mimi’s & do something.” (meaning – anything).

Now one might think that this has made me feel good that she enjoys being here. Actually it has served an entirely different purpose. I have seen myself in Sophia….

Life is passing. For me, my life is more than half over. That is the stark reality. In starting this new year, I have realized that I want this year to be different. I want it to count – for something.

One day the Lord will call me home. Now I am hoping it is when the trumpet sounds & all those I love will go together. I know – pure selfishness on my part as I do not want to experience the pain of losing anyone. But that’s a topic for another day….When He does call me home, I do not want to be like Sophia & say to my Lord:

  • “I don’t want to go home yet.”
  • “I didn’t do nothing yet.”
  • “I want to stay & do something.”

I cannot help but wondering if Sophia, without even knowing, has not expressed the desires that are inside of all of us. We want our lives to count. We so want to do something. Something of value. Something lasting. Something eternal.

In case you are wondering how quickly life passes, James tells us:

“What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  (James 4:14 NIV).

In light of that, the question I am asking myself this morning is: How are we to live?

Thankfully, God does tell us:

“Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.”Â  (Psalm 90:12 NIV).

According to Scripture, there is something to be said about recognizing how quickly our lives pass – we grow in wisdom. That growth can cause us to make our days more productive. To make them count. To do something of eternal value. As we live in this manner, it is then that we will one day be found saying,

“Take me home. I am ready.”
