Last night we got together with another couple to play cards. We have been doing this for the better part of 15 years at this point. Sometimes weekly. At times, less often. But we always manage to find our way back to each other & resume playing. It is kind of like stepping back into a pair of comfortable, worn slippers. There is a comfort there. An ease. The laughs. The competitiveness. The food. The conversation. The fun.

All put together to make for a great night.

While playing, we began to reminisce about how long we have been playing cards together. In the midst of that discussion, we suddenly realized how quickly the years have passed. We wondered –

“Where did they go?”

“How come we didn’t know they were passing so quickly?”

This morning I am still thinking about it. Life passes so quickly. Scripture even confirms this:

“What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â  (James 4:14b  NIV).

So here is the thing that I cannot help but think upon today. If this is true, that life passes so quickly, would it not then also be true that the hard times in life also pass quickly? We are here on this earth for but a short time. When we are young, we think we have so much of life to yet live. And we do. But we do not fully comprehend the vast speed with which our days & years will go by us. We have but a short time to make our lives count. To do the hard thing of living in a way to please, honor & bring glory to Jesus.

So how about we get serious & do the hard things?

Forgive those that have hurt us or done us wrong.

Let go of bitterness & resentment.

Be kind to those that perhaps are not kind to us.

Speak an encouraging word to those who speak discouragingly to us.

Give to the needy.

Offer a helping hand.

I am not sure how much more time I have on this earth. It may be a few days or a good number of years. All I know is that I want the remaining time I have to matter greatly for Him. This morning I am praying and:

“…asking God to fill me (you) with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom & understanding. And I pray this in order that I (you) may live a life worthy of the Lord & may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work.”Â  (Colossians 1: 9b-10 NIV).
