This past Sunday was the second part of our series, Better…….

Better Is One Handful.

Society tells us, “If one is good, more is better.” Yet the Bible tells us:

Better to have one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil & chasing the wind.” Ecclesiastes 4:6 NIV).

What does that mean exactly? It means that it is better to have less of what doesn’t matter & have more of what does matter.

As we have one hand that is full & one hand that is empty, we are free to extend our empty hand to reach out & help others.

What exactly does one handful living look like? It means:

  1. We let go of what doesn’t matter. Hebrews 12:1, “Let us throw off everything that hinders & the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked for us.”. To “throw off” means that we ourselves cast it away from us. We need to: Cut Back – Throw Out – Turn Off – those things that would clutter our lives & detract from living fully focused on the things that God would have for us.
  2. We fight for what does matter. Nehemiah 4:14 tells, “Remember the Lord, who is great  & awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, and your daughters, your wives & your homes.” Our lives, our callings, our families, our homes are too valuable to not fight for.

Randall Worley once said,

The devil doesn’t care whether you live or die, go to heaven or hell. He trembles if you discover between birth & burial why you are here.

May we live wisely, chasing after the things in life that are truly valuable & not as the author of Ecclesiastes describes, “chasing after the wind” (2:17-26).
