In her study, Knowing God By Name, Mary A. Kassian mentions a painting – “La Belle Dame sans Merci” by Sir Frank Dicksee. Having never heard of it, I found a picture of it. She pointed out that in this painting the knight is captivated by the beauty of the woman.

“Captivated” as defined by dictionary.com is “to attract and hold the attention or interest of.”

As I have continued to look at it & go back to it, I was gently reminded of a verse:

“The king is enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord.” Psalm 45:11 NIV

Our Lord is enthralled by the beauty of His people. But here is the thing…He is not only attracted to us. We hold His attention. He is attentive to us – always. He does not lose interest in His people. Not in any one of us.

This morning I was brought to my knees by that thought. I was reminded by the times in life that other things, temporal & fleeting things, took precedence over Him. And yet that is never the case with Him – He is ever attentive to me.

As I have continued to go back & look at the painting, another thought has struck me. I, too, have a knight….

“I saw heaven standing open & there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful & True.” (Revelation 19:11 NIV)

May He, and He alone, be what captivates me all the days of my life.
