We all know the story about the frog & water. A frog placed in boiling water will immediately jump out. But if you place that same frog in cold water, heating the water gradually, he will stay in that water happy as can be & doze. It is said, that the frog will doze contentedly, never waking & will cook to its death.

I wonder at times, if we are very far off from that frog.

Living in a world that is ever changing, can we, as well, become desensitized to what is happening around us? Are we staying in an environment that is causing spiritual death, slowly & over time?

Paul had something to say about this:

“But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood and they have given you wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:14, 15 NLT).

In essence, Paul is saying hold onto that which you have been taught. Hold onto truth. Don’t let your environment dictate to you what you think, believe or hold onto. Let the Scriptures be your sole guide.

There is very good reason for Scripture to be your guide:

“All Scripture is inspired by God & is useful to teach us what is true & to make us realize what is wrong with our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong & teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare & equip his people to do every good work.” (verses 16 & 17 NLT).

Through Scripture:

  1. we learn what is true
  2. we realize what is wrong in our lives & where we must change
  3. we receive correction
  4. we are taught to do what is right
  5. God prepares us through His Word
  6. God equips us to do His will

Today may we become sensitive to the Holy Spirit as He guards our steps so that we do not dangerously step into the culture surrounding us & become more like them & less like Him. May He give us the discernment & the desire to obey & “jump out of the pot” & into His Word.
