I had a conversation with a friend the other day. She shared of a difficult circumstance that was unfolding in her life. The hard part was that she had no control over the situation & just had to go through it. I listened intently, caring about my friend & yet the only words that could come out of my mouth were, “Trust Him.”

Two simple words.

Very difficult to do at times.

Trust….reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing.

Reliance…..trustful dependence.

To trust Him is to rely upon Him, to be dependent upon Him fully. It can be the most difficult thing to do when we cannot understand His ways or what He is bringing about in our lives. When The days we find ourselves in the dark are the very days we need to trust Him most.

Later that day, as I prayed for my friend, the Lord gently reminded me of a verse:

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13 NIV).

There is a chain reaction that occurs in us as we trust in Him….

Trust ””>joy & peace ””> hope.

As we trust Him with our circumstances, becoming fully reliant upon Him & His strength, He fills us with joy & peace. As we are filled with His joy & peace we are filled with hope to the point of overflowing.

The New American Commentary explains it this way:

He is the God of peace in the sense that he alone can give peace. As Paul wrote elsewhere, it is a peace that “transcends all understanding” (Philippians 2:7). It can be experienced & enjoyed, but not rationally explained.

Our circumstances may not change instantly but we are changed. As we trust Him, we are empowered by His Spirit to face life in such a way that we overflow with hope. Perhaps hope even splashes out onto those around us.

Unwavering trust is a rare and precious thing because it often demands a degree of courage that borders on the heroic. (Brennan Manning)

Perhaps our God is looking to raise up a heroic people. May we trust Him!
