how-to-catch-a-liar

Lies. I so dislike them. I hate when someone, anyone lies to me. On the flip side, this strong distaste also means that I am very much aware of & guard myself on telling lies to others. I even have a hard time with embellishing a story.

My kids grew up knowing my distaste for lies. I always told them that I didn’t care what they needed to tell me, I would rather hear the difficult than be told a lie. The result? I heard many things I would rather not have heard but at least I knew I could trust my children. It also taught me some self-control as I had to learn not to react before thinking.

Lies, according to dictionary.com are:

  1. a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive
  2. something intended or serving to convey a false impression
  3. to speak falsely or utter untruth knowingly

You see, a lie has a motive. It is a deliberate action. It intends to deceive or give a false impression. It is always done knowingly.

In John 14, Jesus said this, “I am the way, the truth, & the life.” (verse 6). Jesus IS truth.

Jesus also told us this regarding Satan, “He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar & the father of lies.” (John 8:44 NLT). Satan IS the originator of ALL lies.

So given that lies have a motive, what is Satan’s motive?

Hear me on this one…All, ALL, ALL of Satan’s lies have as their motive the destruction of God’s character & nature in our eyes. Satan wants to distort & ruin our thoughts about God.

Every single time we think…

  • “God doesn’t love me.”
  • “I can’t possibly have worth.”
  • “God can’t use me.”
  • “God’s Word can’t really mean that all things will work for good in my life as I love God.”
  • “It’s OK if I don’t forgive.”

…any of the above thoughts (and many others) we are buying into a lie of the enemy. He is undermining the truth of God’s Word & His character.

So what are we to do?

FIGHT.

“Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you confessed so well before many witnesses.” (1 Timothy 6:12 NLT)

Every day we must fight for our faith. We must fight to believe that what God says in His Word is absolutely true & absolutely to be trusted.

In her book, Freeing Tangled Hearts, Dolores Kimball explains why this fight is so critical to our spiritual survival….

You must never think that giving Satan a victory is a viable alternative to fighting him with all that is within you. We know that he is our ”˜enemy the devil [who] prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour’ (1 Peter 5:8). His desire to devour you will never be satisfied by a single victory over you. His appetite for your soul is as ravenous as a wolf’s & if you give him one victory, he will be back for more, and your ability to resist him in the future will be seriously compromised. In fact, once he has a taste for victory in your life, his efforts against you will be doubled because our resistance to him will have been seriously weakened. Giving up & giving in to Satan is never an option.

May we each dig deep into the Word & fight the good fight. Uncover the lies. Embrace the truth. Hold on tightly to that which you have been given. Giving up & giving in is not an option. Not ever.
