There are times in which we face a dilemma & we feel like we do not know what to do, how to do it or where to turn. These times can create inner turmoil as we question what are we to do next. This morning these thoughts reminded me of Moses. Let me explain….

In Exodus 3, we find Moses tending the sheep of his father-in-law. It is there that he has an encounter with God by which God speaks to him from a burning yet not consuming bush. God tells Moses that He has, indeed, seen the suffering & abuse of His people. He explains that He is about to rescue them & lead them into their own fertile & spacious place. And Moses will be the one to lead them out of their misery. Personally, I think Moses’ response would be true of any of us, as he questions, “Who am I to appear before Pharoah? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11 NLT).

Can we really blame him for asking? The task truly is daunting.

God goes on to assure Moses that He will be with him throughout the entire process. And Moses, in typical Moses style, continues to question. This time he explains to God that he did not have the power over the people.

“What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? What if they say, The Lord never appeared to you?” (Exodus 4:1 NLT).

I think that is a very fair question. Here is God’s response to him:

What is that in your hand? (verse 2).

You see, Moses was a shepherd & in his hand was a shepherd’s staff. His tool of the trade. Moses was already equipped to do what God was asking him to do & he didn’t even know it!!!!

Here is what I realized….

We often already have what we need to do the job, make the decision, or achieve the goal. Sometimes what we need is already in our hands. We can so overlook the obvious.

And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 NIV).

Here is what I learned about what is in our hands:

  1. It may look ordinary to us. But it will do the amazing when empowered by God.
  2. We often are unaware of what has been already provided to us.
  3. We also may be unaware of how to use it in ways other than what we are accustomed or is typical.
  4. God uses the common person in uncommon ways.

Have you looked lately to see what is in your very hands? It may very well be the only thing you need to achieve your goal.
