I get the privilege of picking Sophia up from school two days a week. The conversation home is always a special treat – for me. But then, I have always loved my conversations with both of my children on the ride home from school. Those were special years to me. And so I am thrilled that I am experiencing this again with my grandchildren. Yesterday the weather was most springlike. We drove home with the sunroof open for the first time in a long time. It wasn’t long before I heard the question from the back seat….

“Mimi, can you open my window a little bit?” And then…

“Mimi, can I have it a little more?” And then…

“Mimi, can I have it all the way open?”

The rest of the ride home was precious. She was excited & thrilled with the wind blowing in her face. At one point, I asked her if she wanted that I shut the window a bit. Her response? “No way! Mimi, this is PERFECT!”

So all the way home, she talked about what she was experiencing:

  • “I love my hair blowing.”
  • “Hair blowing tickles.”
  • “Mimi, can you hear the wind whooshing too?”
  • “I love the sound of whooshing.”
  • “My hands are like a snow man’s or a penguins.” (Yes, I let her hold them up & out the window. After all, this was our first spring joyride).

And that is when it hit me….

It really was a joy ride. Sophia was experiencing such joy in the moment. The wind brought laughter & life into our ride home.

I want to be like Sophia. I want to experience that joy from wind. Wind of a different sort….

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. (Acts 2:1,2 ESV).

The Holy Spirit descended that day & the people were never the same. They were empowered. They were excited. They were filled with joy at what God was working among them. Life was never the same. Not then. Not ever.

I want that in my life. I do not desire a faith that is stale. I desire vibrancy, excitement, some joy. OK, a lot of joy. Even if life is hard. I want laughter. I want to feel alive. I want to experience His Spirit at work in me. Each & every day.

YOU have made known to me the path of life; YOU will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. (Psalm 16:11 NIV)

All I can say to that is, “Lord. Bring. It. On.”

I had a hard time concentrating on the ride home. The view in my adjusted rear view mirror was this…..
