We all do it at one time or another. We put all our hope in one person. One job. One career. One position. One investment. One church. One ministry. One friend.

We all do it.

We put all our eggs in one basket.

We have all heard the idiomatic phrase, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”. Yet we all do it.

It means that we should not put our hopes or our focus or our resources on one person or possibility. It seems so much safer to put everything in one place. Then there is only one thing that needs our attention and protection.

The problem with putting all our eggs in one basket is that the basket gets too heavy. It eventually bulges & breaks, leaving you nothing but a mess to deal with & clean up after….

  • we lose the one job that was our dream job & we seemingly lose our confidence, our identity or our self-worth
  • the one friend that we thought was our forever friend walks away & we are left with a broken heart & feeling unwanted & unloved
  • the investment goes sour & our bank account is left empty
  • the church that we thought we would attend till our death has issues that cannot be resolved leaving us with a crisis of faith

You know…all the eggs were in one basket & the bottom fell out. And with the bottom out, we seem to think life will never be the same again. That we will never be OK again.

Today I am reminded that Scripture tells us there is truly only One in Whom we can place all our hope:

How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

Whose hope is in the Lord his God,

Who made heaven and earth,
The sea and all that is in them;
Who keeps faith forever;

Who executes justice for the oppressed;
Who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets the prisoners free.

The Lord opens the eyes of the blind;
The Lord raises up those who are bowed down;
The Lord loves the righteous;

The Lord protects the strangers;
He supports the fatherless and the widow,
But He thwarts the way of the wicked.

The Lord will reign forever.

(Psalm 146: 5-10  NASB)

Today I am reminded that those eggs – both the ones in the basket & those that have fallen out of the bottom – each play a part in our life. Each egg – scrambled together – make up our life. And somehow our God uses it all for His glory & honor. He is the One that is holding all our eggs! Not one fell to the ground or cracked or broke wide open without His knowledge.
There is only One Who can hold it all!
