I am not quite sure how it happens but every now & then it does. I am talking about the moment that…..

~~~~the ordinary becomes extraordinary.
I had one of those last night.
I was driving home from a meeting. The meeting was already unique for me. I met with the florist & my future daughter-in-law to discuss flowers for the special day. The day when my son & she will covenant WITH God in marriage. The day they covenant BEFORE God to love one another for richer, for poorer. In sickness & in health. The “till death do we part” day. That day.
I have been one of those moms that has prayed for the spouses of my children. I cannot say it was every single day but it was often. I can say without a doubt that I prayed for their wedding days & future spouses on each of the very days that my children were born. That was a definite. In the stillness of the night, as I held them & checked under their tightly wrapped receiving blankets & their little heads yet in their hospital hats, I was preparing in my heart for the day that I would give them away to another. I realize now how strange a beginning we had.
And then I was reminded to pray for their spouses when:
  • she played with her dolls & I saw glimpses of a future mom in her
  • he played with his trucks & I thought ahead to the days he would be driving to work to provide
  • on their first days of school
  • those first school dances
  • each time I went to a wedding
  • the boys, or girls, began to call the house for each of them
  • going for that very first tuxedo rental
  • each time we talked through heart breaks
So many times over the years. And God had already been faithful once. So I knew He would be faithful again to provide. Driving home should have been an ordinary ride home. Me, music blaring & God in my sanctuary. Typical car ride for me. At some point, I noticed that it was pouring yet the sun was shining, brilliantly I might add, and there was not a cloud in the sky. The rain fell with such beauty in the sunlight that I found myself amazed at the way it fell with such grace even though it was a downpour. The sound of the rain on my car did not match the gentle beauty that was before my eyes.
So I called her, my future daughter-in-law, to explain the sun shower that I was experiencing. I wanted to share the beauty with someone and who better to share it with than her! She tells me that the sun is out where she is & there is no rain. She then says, “Look out – maybe you will see a rainbow.” She says it at the same time that I spot them and begin screaming in excitement as I cannot believe what I am beholding. Not one but two!!! Both equally as visible & vibrant with color. Both equally arching in the sky. Side by side.
The ordinary becoming extraordinary.
The rest of the car ride was a moment when God whispered into this mother’s heart.
“They are going to be OK.”
“I will be with them. I will bless them.”
“Your prayers have been heard.”
God, The Divine, in all His created majestic beauty displayed the sign of His covenant as I was praying for a yet to be made covenant.
And God said, “Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.
(Genesis 9:16 NIV84)
It is God Himself Who saw the rainbow along with me last night. I may have been alone in my car but He took note of it last night as well. And He remembered. He saw & remembered His covenant with man. It is an everlasting covenant.
Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken our of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of the man.” For this reason a man will leave his father & his mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
(Genesis 2:22-24 NIV84)
It is God Himself Who brought the woman to the man. How had I ever missed that? Man did not go searching for her. Man did not look for the girl of his dreams. God Himself brought the woman to man. Hand selected.
Last night He assured me that this girl, this woman girl was also hand selected. He had brought her to the man, the man child that I had birthed.
He reminded me that He Alone is a covenant making, covenant keeping God.
And in case I needed proof, He displayed Himself just for me with a double rainbow – one for my son, one for his yet to be wife.
Two rainbows.
The promised sign of His covenant.
The ordinary became extraordinary.
And I am humbled & awed yet again by my God.
