9780310499268Since we live in a very busy world & time keeps marching on, we all can find that we struggle to fit in time to spend with God. In his book, God in My Everything, Ken Shigematsu, seeks to help us find a “rule for life” which can establish a rhythm by which time with God is carved out daily.

At first glance, one might say that this is just another book like Richard Foster’s, Celebration of Discipline or Rick Warren’s, A Purpose Driven Life. I have read & enjoyed both of those books. Yet I still found “God In My Everything” to be a helpful & an enjoyable read. The book is easy to read & has many enjoyable quotes & stories. The author writes very transparently which I found to be encouraging. It demonstrated to me that he was writing from the perspective of yet being on this same journey and not as one who has arrived or succeeded.

The book offers “rules” but stresses flexibility & finding the rhythm that works best for you.

I came to realize that a better guiding rule (than praying first thing in the morning) is that we should give the best time of our day to God; and by best I mean the time when we are most alert and capable of being present to God.

(a quote by Gordon Smith included on pages 56-57)

In writing on Scripture, Ken states:

One of the gifts of prayerfully listening to Scripture is that the Word becomes part of who we are; it lodges in the heart and becomes available as food for our journey.

(page 73)

In his afterward, Ken shares that his wife calls him “the happiest pastor that I know”. In response, he writes ….

…my happiness largely flows from my rule of life, this trellis that supports my friendship with God.

Happiness is not the goal of the rule, but joy and peace and love are the fruit of a life rooted in Christ – and our trellis supports this relationship.

(page 215-216)

Our trellis is that which our relationship with God is founded upon & grows from. I found the author to be authentic in what he shared and challenging to my own walk with God. No matter if your journey with God is just beginning or is well under way, any one will benefit from reading “God In My Everything”.

I highly recommend this book for either person use or small group discussion.
