With all the recent changes in health care insurances and reforms, I thought it was time to become more informed. The aging process cannot be avoided for any of us and my desire is truly to make wiser decisions in the years ahead. The Golden Years: Healthy Aging and the Older Adult
It is a short book, covering the subject broadly so as to give a quick overview. It is not meant to be a reference book but a beginning. The author states his purpose as such:
My purpose is to help readers gain a better understanding of aging, good health practices, preventative medicine, common problems associated with aging, and chronic conditions experienced by older adults. The chapters to follow will address each of these topics and more, including recent changes to Medicare by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). (page 6)
The author writes from years of experience as a nurse and minister. I found him to be informative and insightful into the aging process and the challenges that are presented both for the aging and for the caretakers. This book was a good overview but certainly not deep and/or exhaustive. But it was a good starting point & gets one started in the right direction.
While I did not necessarily agree with everything presented in this book, I did find it most helpful and would still recommend the book. With the rapidly changing health care policies and reform, it truly behooves us to stay as well informed as is possible. This book was a blend of the medical, practical, emotional and political aspects of taking care of the aged population. May we always take care of the aging with wisdom, love and dignity. They are surely a treasure.
