One of my favorite shows is Revolution which can be found on NBC. It is a series whose storyline introduces an American society fifteen years after a world wide blackout. If you have seen any of J.J. Abrams’ other series then you are familiar with the fact that the series is tense and science fictional in nature. It is now in its second season and hopefully not its last!

One of my favorite characters is Aaron Pittman. Aaron is a computer genius who went to MIT and truly seemed inept to relate with people or fit in. He is a gentle and unassuming man who, as the series develops, you learn that he comes from a Jewish family but no longer has any beliefs at all. Aaron is a likeable character, always wanting to help and protect others but a fearful sort of man. Yet somehow in his desire to be good to people, he always finds the strength and courage to do the hard thing.

And now, he is discovering that he has some secret ability which he never was fully aware. The one character that was so unassuming is now becoming the one with all the ability, all the power, if you will.

Aaron Pittman reminds me of some others….

  • David, the shepherd boy, who with a sling and some stones slays the giant
  • Joseph, the dreamer and youngest of all his brothers, who saves them all during a time of famine
  • Joshua, who takes down the city of Jericho, by marching and shouting
  • the nameless boy with his loaves of bread and fish through whom thousands were fed
  • Moses, a stuttering mess, who goes before Pharoah and demands that the Israelites be set free

It is the unassuming, the least likely, in whom our God often chooses to work. It is then that God is most visible and receives the glory. We are told this ….

This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength. Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.(1 Corinthians 1:25-29, NLT).

I don’t think J.J.Abrams is far off the mark on this one at all. In fact, I find myself cheering Aaron on. After all, he is the least likely character to do the heroic. Seriously. And now, I find myself admiring him, hoping he will use his new found power for good and not evil.

Somehow I think all of heaven cheers on when the weak and foolish do the great and mighty.
