We looked out the family room window at our snow covered, moonlit yard and there they were – three deer. Beautiful and majestic. Their faces could be clearly seen as they looked the yard over for food. They nibbled at the bird seed which had been knocked to the ground, causing me to be thankful we had kept them filled. Having grown up in the Bronx, I have yet to tire of seeing wildlife in our yard. As the night continued, they disappeared into the woods only to reappear three more times. This morning, I went out on the deck to take in the view….
It was hard to believe that the three deer had left so many footprints and tracks. It looked like they had run all over the place when they actually had walked slowly, almost in a graceful trance. But there were tracks everywhere. No rhyme or reason. The markings seemed confused almost as if to say they had no idea where they were going.
I have gone back to look out at them several times since. I wonder how often my life looked similar to those footprints – confused, wandering, no rhyme or reason. How often had I walked myself in circles?
As I have looked out at the footprints, I have given thought to my past and future paths. Today I rest gratefully in these Scriptures and truths:
- He guides me. “He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.” (Psalm 23:3, NLT)
- As I seek to be taught, He will respond. “Teach me how to live, O Lord. Lead me along the right path.” (Psalm 27:11, NLT)
- As I seek His will, He will show me. “Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” (Proverbs 3:6, NLT)
- He will not only show me, He will lead the way. “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow.” (Isaiah 48:17, NLT)
I am so grateful for His Word which has assured me the paths I have gone have been the right paths.
And I am grateful for the assurance, He will continue to lead me along His paths.

I love God’s promise to guide us and lead us! It is so reassuring when we are on the right path with Him. Also, if we ever get off track, God will graciously lead us back on His way! His love is never ending!
So thankful for the times He has lead me back on track!
Hi Joanne, I’m afraid my life has too often looked like the deer paths you discovered from your deck. I love the list of Scriptures here~prayers seeking God’s guidance. I especially like the NLT version of Proverbs 3:6.
Thank you, Joanne, and blessings.
Yours & mine both, Janis! But as Joan shared above, He so graciously leads us back on track.
Oh – I love your deer paths – and the curved one, especially that looks like he was circling back! What a sweet connection – how often to our paths curve and veer – and He shepherds us to where we need to be! What a delightful message!
Thank you for sharing. We so need to be shepherded where we need to be, don’t we! We have now seen these deer each night for about a week now. Our eyes are glued to our yard each night between 8 & 9PM 🙂
What lovely visitors! Stopping by from Laura’s.
They have now stopped by every night for about a week between 8 & 9PM. There are no words to express our delight as we watch them & they now watch us up at the windows 🙂
Meandering deer tracks – what a great metaphor! Thanks for linking up with #HearItUseIt, Joanne!
