Conversations are such a part of our daily lives. Some of us can talk all day long. Yet some hardly speak at all. Some of us choose their words carefully. And some have tongues that will shoot off words without a thought.

I love a good conversation. To be able to walk away feeling connected or with a new thought to ponder is a gift.

And a recent conversation made me ponder ….. She said,  “I always have to be “game on”. I can never let my guard down. Or just be myself. It can be exhausting.” Those were the words that came from her mouth, almost with a sense of a longing to be free.

As soon the words were spoken, I remembered a quote I had recently read….

To be nobody-but-yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody but yourself – means to fight the hardest battle which any human can fight – and never stop fighting.

(E.E. Cummings, quoted in The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown, page 51)

This is the battle we all find ourselves in at some point. The battle to remain authentic, real, in a world which desperately tries to force us into its mold. To stop fighting the battle will result in us becoming someone, something, other than who God intends for us to be. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, put it this way, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2, NLT).

Fight the battle to be you.

And never stop fighting.

We need you to be you.
