I had read the portion of Scripture in a devotional and have been completely stuck on this one page, unable to move on. I have been there for about a week and not exactly sure why. Yet I have been certain there was something contained in the words and paragraphs specifically meant for me. For days now, I have gone back, reread the page, closed the book and wondered, “What am I missing? What am I to learn?”

Back to that same very familiar page, I turned this morning. Only today I used a different version to read the now very familiar Scripture:

Present yourselves as building stones for the construction of a sanctuary vibrant with life, in which you’ll serve as holy priests offering Christ-approved lives up to God. (1 Peter 2:5, The Message)

Even as I read the words, I knew something was beginning to click, the stirring inside my heart began to churn.

A stone, as defined by dictionary.com is “a hard substance; a rock or boulder”. It also is defined as “a piece of rock quarried and worked into a specific size and shape for a particular purpose”.

Now it all began to fall into place…..

My life, my heart, can either be rock hard or quarried for a particular purpose.

And so can yours.

Miners can look at rock, which most of us may not appreciate, knowing with a bit of work and processing there is tremendous worth to be uncovered. They will chip and dig and drill and extract and crush as they know the end result is worth all the work and effort. A rock that remains hard will serve no purpose as it has not been brought to life.

In that Scripture, we are called to be “living stones”. A living object will be animated, full of life. As living stones, others should be able to see lives full of purpose and love and hope. As living stones, our lives should exude proof that our faith in Christ truly makes life different for us and worth living.

From that portion of Scripture, I gleaned four things today:

  1. I am to present myself.
  2. I am to allow God to do construction in my life.
  3. My life is meant to be vibrant.
  4. My life is an offering, which is Christ-approved.

The question I find challenging me, and may it challenge you as well, is this one: Do others see me as a “living stone”? Is there a vibrancy displayed which points to the Source of all life, Jesus Christ?

May we be living stones, called and chosen by God, fitting together to bring Him praise and glory.
