We both needed the vacation desperately although neither of us realized just how much. It was a wonderful week away.

And then we came home. We knew we would.

As good as it was to get away, it felt even better to come home. Let’s see if I am still saying that in a few days when no one comes to make my bed in the morning, cook my food, bring me clean towels, serve up delicious desserts, turn down our bed down at night leaving a delicious chocolate on each of our pillows and a towel origami figure.

The rest confirmed what I already knew to be true – I can do nothing apart from Him. Scripture goes so far as to tell me “He sustains all things by his powerful word.” (Hebrews 1:3, NIV)

Now if “all” means exactly that – all – then this means He sustains each one of us by His Word. To take it even further, He speaks over our lives every day, perhaps all day long. Even taking a breath involves Him. Seeing as each of us breathes all day long, about 14 breaths a minute (I won’t tell you how I know this), He is involved in our lives a whole lot more than we recognize on any given day.

Then I got to thinking…..

If He is involved in all things in our lives, do I ask Him this question — “Are You in this?”. Our souls, the seat of our emotions and personality, needs to be satisfied and engaged with Him even in the dumb, routine and mundane things we do each day. Only as He is involved in all aspects of our day will we ever approach life with a different attitude in all we do.

Maybe coming into summer, a time which may break away from our ordinary routines, we can begin to focus on these two truths –

He sustains us each day by His Word.

We CAN know the Word which will sustain us!

“The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary (at times, that is each one of us!). He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.” (Isaiah 50:4, NIV).

As I have looked at this Scripture the last few days, I have begun asking myself two questions:

  1.  Am I taking the posture to be taught?
  2. Or do I assume I already “know”?

Summer is quickly coming upon us. School days are winding down. The hazy, lazy days are coming. Days of an easier routine. Relaxation even.

May we make time to receive from Him the word which will sustain us. May we approach each day asking Him to show us something new in His Word and about Himself.

May we remain a student and be ever learning something new from Him.

His Word sustains.
