“If you put what little you have in your hand into the hand of God, it won’t just add up; God will make it multiply.” (Mark Batterson, The Circle Maker, page 51)

This quote has been mulling around in my head for days now. Days. I just cannot seem to let go of it. I wonder if I am alone in thinking that the little I have in my hand is just that – too little to make a difference.

And then I look and see what happened as others gave their little ….

Like the day Jesus was in the Temple watching as the rich people dropped their gifts in the collection box. I wonder what He observed. Were the rich people holding back? Were they giving begrudgingly? Were they looking around to make sure they were noticed as they gave? There had to be something going on as Jesus took note of the poor widow who came by and dropped her two small coins into the box.

“Clink, clink.”

Did the coins echo? Their very sound drawing attention to the fact that they were small, insignificant coins?

What about the widow? Did she think about her small gift and wonder if what she held in her hand would make a difference at all? Listen to what Jesus says about her …

“I tell you the truth, ” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.” (Luke 21:3-4, NLT)

The widow did not give two small coins, she gave the smallest of Jewish coins at that time. Yet Jesus saw that which was in her hand as being more valuable than other larger offerings.

We each have been given resources – whether financially or of opportunities or of talents.

What is of most importance to God is the attitude in which we use our resources. The heart attitude counts for more than anything we may be able to give or do. At every point of our lives, in all that we give or do, Jesus responds to out motives.

Another time, we see a large crowd gathered around Jesus to listen to Him teach and hunger set in. Philip, one of the disciples present apprises the situation … “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!” (John 6:7, NLT).

Yet upon finding a little boy with his bag lunch of five barley loaves of bread and two fish, they prepare to feed the people. And lest you think this is an intimate lunch date, the men alone numbered about 5,000! (verse 10)

The people were all fed as much as they wanted and there were leftovers!

Take a good look at what you have been given. Little or big, put it into the hands of God and watch what He will do.

It just might not add up.

For in God’s economy ….

Little —> Much!
