Last week I found a new show to watch – Ellen’s Design Challenge. I will admit – I am a reality show junkie. The dramas affect me way too deeply causing me to lose sleep all night. Besides, I also love me some HGTV.

So here’s the premise of Ellen’s show …. six furniture designers compete to build and design furniture in 24 hours. Each week is a different challenge which will eliminate one designer until only the winner will remain.

In the opener, each designer was matched with a carpenter to assist them. The carpenter was to take directions from the designer to help them best build their unique piece of furniture.

Some quickly and eagerly embraced their carpenter, grateful for their help, experience, and suggestions. Others … well not so much. They bucked and insulted and argued with their carpenter which only resulted in a struggle the entire length of the challenge.

As I watched, I remembered:

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
(Romans 12:18, NIV)

“How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony! For harmony is as precious as the anointing oil….Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon…And there the Lord has pronounced his blessing, even life everlasting.” (Psalm 133, NLT – and a special thank you to my son’s 6th grade Bible teacher for having the class memorize this short Psalm in the 6th grade)

“So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.” (Romans 14:19, NLT)

Harmony brings a picture of agreement, unity, friendship, a blending of ideas.

Here is what I learned from Ellen’s challenge and from each of the above Scriptures:

  1. We each have a part to do in getting along with one another … “as far as it depends on you”.
  2. Harmony is pleasant and precious and refreshing. Harmony —> the blessing of the Lord.
  3. Aim for harmony.

A funny thing unfolded as the challenge continued on …

The ones who got along did the best.

Let’s do our best.
