“On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not fine the body of the Lord Jesus.” (Luke 24: 1-3)

One Sunday morning, centuries ago, a vacancy sign went up outside a tomb in Jerusalem. That never happens – in Jerusalem or anywhere. Tombs are empty or full – never vacant. That would mean that someone had occupied the space and then had vacated it. Dead people don’t vacate.

Jesus did.

But not because he was dead. First, he left death and then the grave behind. He arose! He was seen walking, talking, and eating. Those who had seen his hands and feet nailed to the Cross thought it was over, that Jesus would never walk again. His death confirmed their fears. But they had forgotten he had foreseen their confusion and had encouraged them to be patient. They only had to wait three days.

These early followers were too afraid to wait- too ashamed to wait – to devastated to wait. So they were surprised! And they went from being stunned by his death to being overwhelmed by his resurrection. They were changed.

Jesus rose bodily. That means, among other things, that he had more walking to do, more steps to take. The promise of the resurrection includes this amazing thought: we will spend eternity walking where Jesus walked. And he will walk with us.
