The other night we saw an amazing act of God right in our backyard – a rainbow.

It stretched high in the sky, from one end of our woods to the other. Vibrant, clear, distinct.

I grabbed my iPad, ran out onto our deck and snapped one photo …..

I ran back inside and sat with my husband on the couch as we admired both the rainbow, yet in the sky, and my photo, astounded by the beauty we were seeing. The reminder of the promise of God and His faithfulness was not lost on either of us.

I then did what any of you would have done – I posted the photo to both Facebook and Twitter. No hashtags, nothing fancy, just the photo. We were totally unprepared for what would occur. My photo received more retweets, more engagement in conversation than anything I had ever shared.

In all that activity, only one person was known to me. The others were all strangers.

And here is what I learned:

  1. Rainbows astound us all. Whether believers or not, everyone was astounded by the rainbow.
  2. Rainbows remind us. Rainbows remind us of God. In seeing a rainbow splashed across the sky, we all find ourselves realizing there is One who is greater than us all and over us all.
  3. Rainbows speak of hope. Rainbows breathe hope into our world and its problems. Suddenly the eyes of the beholder is reminded of the promises of God, Who is faithful to His every word.

I opened up to the familiar portion of Scripture where the rainbow is introduced to humanity. After the world was destroyed by flood waters, saving only Noah, his family, and the animals, we find God saying:

Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and all living creatures, for all generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with  you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth.”
(Genesis 9:12-16, NLT)

Let that sink in …

Yes, we remember God as we take in the beauty of a rainbow. But even more significantly, God is remembering His promise to the earth He created and all living creatures. It is He, God, who is seeing the rainbow at the same time we each see it. This colorful sign is the way our God reminds Himself of His promise to us.

God has made a covenant with us, a promise which He will never break. Each time we see a rainbow spanning the skies, boasting of its Creator may thoughts of His power and majesty flood our minds.

May we remember God for

He remembers us.
