“What are you thinking?”

He most often asks the question of me when I seem deep in thought. Many times, I respond, “Nothing.”

He answers back, “You’ve got to be thinking something. We’re always thinking.”

And he’s right. Hardly ever are we without thought.

Our thoughts matter probably a whole lot more than we even give them credit …. “For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7, NKJV)

Scripture is telling us that our thoughts will become the very words we speak aloud. The words we speak, we will eventually act out. Our repeated behaviors become habits which will become the core of our character.

If our desire is to have godly character then we must start with taking control of our thoughts each and every day.

“I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious – the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise not to curse. Put into practice what you have learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized.” (Philippians 4:8-9, The Message)

There you have it – put it into practice, make a habit of it. Then your hearts and minds will be filled with the peace of God.

Let’s focus on God’s good gifts, thinking on all He has done. Let’s remember His grace and mercies extended to each of us. Let these be the thoughts we dwell on today.

May we get into the habit of thinking on Him.

It’s a very good habit to get into!
