Marie Durand was born in the beautiful area of Southern France. She chose to live most of her life in a dark and unhealthy prison rather than follow a religion which, in her opinion, was contrary to the teachings of Christ. Over time, she took on the role of leader, as she was one of the few prisoners who could read and write. She became a source of encouragement to those around her due to her knowledge of Scripture.

In her book, Marie Durand, Simonetta Carr tells the moving story of Marie’s courage and perseverance while her faith was under trial. She writes with a simplicity, rich with details, allowing the reader to catch a glimpse of what it would be like to be imprisoned for not denying one’s faith. The book is beautifully illustrated which will enhance any young reader’s understanding and grasp of the events.

The chapters are well organized and kept short in order to keep a young reader’s attention and yet fills in many details. This is a wonderful way for children to learn about an era in Church history many may not be familiar with. Included at the end of the book is a timeline of Marie Durand’s life; a Did You Know section which included other interesting facts; and a letter from Marie to her niece, Anne, presented in an artifact fashion which added to the delightful style of this book.

Marie Durand is the beautiful story of the faith of a young woman who continued to live faithfully to what God had called her, even in the face of persecution.

This is a hard covered book with pages beautifully printed making this a wonderful book to gift to any child or school library.
