Over the years, we throw words around rather casually, often not thinking of the meaning or the impact they may have on others or ourselves. Familiarity with the word can rob us of the very depth of meaning we desperately need.

And then there are those mornings, when in the dark and stillness, a word hits anew.

The study asked that I define the word “redeem”. Simple enough really. I quickly write in my journal – “to buy back”.

After all, we are the recipients of redemption …

“God sent him [Jesus] to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.” (Galatians 5:5, NLT)

In this verse “To buy freedom” (or redeem), indicates a delivery from, a release of something, or a release from enemy territory (from The New Testament Lexical Aids, Key Word Bible).

God sets us free from sin, hurtful memories, unforgiveness, resentments, anger, insecurities and jealousies. In His love and grace and mercy, He seeks to keep us liberated and living our days in His freedom. He frees us to be people whose lives are a display of His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22) as we keep step with Him each day.

I redeem coupons each time I go to grocery shopping, receiving the monetary value in exchange for the slip of paper. The value differs depending on the manufacturer, the product, and the number purchased.

Our God redeems each of us with exactly the same price, the shed blood of His Son. There is no difference in value placed on any of our lives. God redeems us all with the same Blood, although He redeems us from very different places and circumstances.

We are all equal at the foot of the Cross.

Each life tells it own unique story of redemption.

And in the telling, we tell His Story.

Redemption.
