I love my house, although it is not necessarily the house I love but our yard.

Growing up in the Bronx, we did not have a yard. We were surrounded by buildings and sidewalks which left little room for “nature” to occur.

But now, living on our plot of land, we have marveled at the sights we have seen over the years.

There has never been a shortage of excitement over bunnies, woodchucks, various birds, red tailed fox, and deer. They have fascinated and delighted all of us.

So it was not unusual for Dad to yell to me, “Jo, look out the front window!” The very tone of his voice sent me running but no where prepared for the sight on our front lawn …

On our way in from church, we had spotted the bunny which had been struck by a car and truly meant to move it to the back woods. But we settled in and somehow, we forgot he was there. And now, there was a big old hawk sitting atop of his find.

Seriously, four adults were glued and moving to various windows and doors to get the best view and photos. {{I seriously need to get a better camera!}} We watched as his talons held his meal down and carefully prepared his dinner. Fur was flying everywhere and I do mean everywhere. The strength of the hawk was evident as was his intent.

I am not sure what happened but he eventually flew away and we sat down at the dining room table when dinner was ready.

We may have forgotten but the hawk remembered, for on Monday morning I again heard, “Jo, he’s back!”

I kid you not, that hawk had returned for seconds! He was equally as filled with intent. He was focused and attentive to anything going on around him.

We know we have an enemy of our souls as well. He circles around, much like the hawk, looking for his prey. He strikes and when we have been knocked down sufficiently, he takes off.

But here’s the thing – he’s smart and sneaky and savvy. He knows his prey. He’s patient and waits. And he does return, when we least expect it, to strike again.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.” (1 Peter 5:8-9, NLT)

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:4-5, NIV)

For two days, we watched what my husband called, “The circle of life”, unfold on our lawn. I am reminded of the circle of life which my God has freely given to me. God, sending His Son to die for me, and when I accept Him as my Savior, I obtain life. A rich and satisfying life.

Let’s not provide “seconds”.
Our faith is our assurance of victory – every single time.
Our God empowers us to overcome.
