“From this One Word are all things, and all things speak of Him; and this is the Beginning which also speaketh unto us. No man without Him understandeth or rightly judgeth. The man to whom all things are one, who bringeth all things to one, who seeth all things in one, he is able to remain steadfast of spirit and at rest in God. O God, who are the Truth, make me one with Thee in everlasting love. It wearieth me oftentimes to read and listen to many things; in Thee is all that I wish for and desire … speak Thou alone to me.”

(The Imitation of Christ by Thomas A. Kempis, The First Book, page 6)

Last year the news wore me down. I have to admit with the constant barrage of news, talk radio, tweets, and Facebook posts and rants, I found myself on overload. I longed for quiet and even more so, I longed for truth.

The beginning of a new year is always the perfect time to turn our thinking to the beginning and brings the reminder:

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness never can extinguish it.” (John 1:1-5, NLT)

It is time for God’s Word to overwhelm our hearts and minds. We need to embrace and hold onto the truth that His Word is a living word, penned just for me, just for you. In these days we are living, the wisdom contained in every book is a requirement for each and every day.

John brings out three points for us today:

  1. The Word was present in the beginning. The Word has always existed. It is an eternal Word.
  2. The Word gave life to everything that was created.
  3. The Word is light and can never be extinguished.

At a time when our focus may be on one word,
may we focus on His Word.

The Word alone will keep us steadfast and at rest in God in these changing times. May it be His Words which speak truth to us so that we are able to bring life and light with us wherever we may journey.
