There is something special about receiving mail. Agree?

If you don’t agree all one needs to do is scroll through social media where mail is displayed all day long. Packages which included books, chocolate, jewelry, socks, headbands, artwork, candles fill our feeds throughout the day. And that is all well and good. I am certainly not knocking it.

Even four year old Jocelyn knows mail is special. Last week I found her on the front steps, without shoes, no coat on and standing in the snow patiently waiting for the mailman to make his stop at our house. I kid you not and I will never criticize any mom or caretaker whose child manages to get out of the house ever again!

But I digress …

The days – when a simple card, selected and personalized by one’s own handwriting slips into our mailboxes on the outside of our house in the most unsuspecting of ways – are still the most special of days to me.

And yesterday was one of those days for me.

A card, a bookmark, and a teabag tucked inside an envelope was all it took to move me to tears, sending the words my heart needed to hear, and blessed my day.

The sender apologized for the card being late for how could she know that it was right on time.

On time, that single opportune or suitable moment when something special occurs in our lives.

Even the writer of Ecclesiastes recognized that everything has its own season, an appropriate time for every activity:

“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.”
(Ecclesiastes 3:1, NLT)

We all acknowledge there is a right time, desire to be on time and yet, do we take the time to realize that opportunities are fleeting and can pass us by.

I sit here, pecking away at the keys in an attempt to get my thoughts and feelings down. The beautiful aroma of lemon and ginger fills my nostrils, bringing a comfort of being remembered by a friend. Every sip reminding me that a friend thought of me.

Here’s the thing … I have not met this friend face to face in real life. Yet her card and thoughts – and tea – touched me deeply.

We can encourage from afar. Sight unseen but hearts known.

Our God knows us well, deeply, and intimately. He knows exactly what we need, when we need it, and the right time to deliver:

“For God says, ‘At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you. Today is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2, NLT)

I’m challenging each of us today. Who can you surprise? Who can you call or write or text today? Who has God been placing in your thoughts and nudging you to contact?

Do it. Don’t waste today. A simple thought can be a greater blessing than we could ever realize.

And now I think I will finish my cup of tea – Lemon and Ginger to be exact – sit a spell and thank the Lord for the friends He brings to bless us. Even the ones we may not have met face to face but are able to love because it is He who joins hearts together.
