“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him yet again – my Savior and my God! (Psalm 42:11, NLT)

The psalmist often gave his soul a talking to when he found himself down. The psalmist had confidence in God’s ability to handle every situation.

“He encouraged his heart to trust God with a positive expectation that He would come through for him, that God would work for his good with perfect wisdom, perfect plans, perfect timing, and perfect power.”
(The Holman Old Testament Commentary, volume 11, page 227)

How good is that? Our God does all things perfectly! He works in our lives with:

  • Perfect wisdom. “All glory to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, forever. Amen” (Romans 16:27, NLT).
  • Perfect plans. “God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection” (2 Samuel 22:31, NLT).
  • Perfect timing. “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time”
    (Ecclesiastes 3:11a, NLT).
  • Perfect power. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV).

God works in our lives with perfection to always give us a life filled with hope. ‘Hope’, from the Hebrew word “yacha” means to “wait upon God’s perfect timing with a confident and strong trust in God about the future” (The Holman Old Testament Commentary).

When our souls face discouraging times, we must talk to ourselves to remind ourselves to hope in God. We can wait upon His perfect wisdom, perfect plans, perfect timing, and perfect power to work in our lives.

“Instead of muttering in this depressed, unhappy way … remind yourself of God, who God is, and what God is and what God has done, and what God has pledged himself to do.” (D. Martin Loyd-Jones)

Our God works in complete perfection.
Talk to your soul today!

Prayer: Lord, I come to You confessing that at times I allow my situations to get me down. Thank you for including in Your Word, examples of how we should encourage ourselves in You. Thank you that You are perfect in all things. Forgive me for the times I forget this. In Your Name I pray, Amen.
