“I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.” (Psalm 13:6, NLT)

We tend to base the goodness of the Lord towards us on our current circumstances and this can leave us in a state of spiritual amnesia and shortsightedness. Not at all healthy for us.

The psalmist is crying out to God for help. We see his dire need but we are not told if or how God has responded to change his situation. As he turned to the Lord, instead of hearing or listening to his enemies gloat, he came to trust God more and was filled with joy. And the same will be for us.

“I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me!”

As we push aside any current situation we are facing, what are we then able to sing about?

  • In our brokenness, we discover He is the cure. He comes to our assistance when we are broken, needy, and poor. “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap” (Psalm 113:7, NIV).
  • He is present in every illness, even when we are weak and dying. “He feels pity for the weak and needy, and he will rescue them” (Psalm 72:13, NLT).
  • He lifts us up and sets us back on our feet when we have fallen. “He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along” (Psalm 40:2, NLT).
  • He sets those abandoned into families. “Father to the fatherless, defender of the widows – this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy” (Psalm 68:5-6, NLT).
  • He causes us to rise from our wounds. “He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed” (Isaiah 53:5b, NLT). His wounding was so that our wounds could be healed. We can be whole and healthy in all aspects of life because He was injured.

We are His and He is good to us. In all things. Every day. In ways far beyond our comprehension.

Jesus loves us.
He has redeemed us.
He has set us free.
He is with us each day of our life.

And He will make beautiful things out of the dust.
