There are many ways we pursue our calling. We become involved in our schools, our churches, our neighborhoods, and organizations. We can often be amazed by the achievements or successes of those around us. Even as I write the word, “astounding”, I am convicted of how easily, and often, we throw the words “astounding” and “amazing” around in conversation.

Yet only God can truly astound and amaze.

To astound means > “capable of overwhelming with amazement; stunningly surprising” (dictionary.com).

When our God overwhelms us, He shows up and stunningly surprises us, through and through. We need to take the time to quickly pull back on the reins of our heart. Let me explain.

“We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” (2 Corinthians 4:7, NLT)

May we not boast, not even the slightest, in ourselves, in our serving, in our willingness, in our giving, or even in our praying. Sometimes, in the recesses of our minds, we harbor the thought that we had something to do with it. This is all pride will need to enter. Just the one little crack.

Don’t even entertain the thought.

May the little crack only shed light on the Great Treasure we house. May we remember we are but fragile jars. He is the great power. May He be the light which shines through, for He alone is the Light of the World, able to save souls.

The Message says it well:

“If you only look at us, you might well miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us.”

All glory and honor to our God, Who alone does the astounding and amazing.
May they only see Jesus.
