Having heard Carol Kent speak and read several of her books, I knew this devotional was sure to be a rich storehouse of encouragement.
In her latest book, He Holds My Hand, Carol Kent brings a devotional written during a time she was desperate to hear from God. When her son was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, she knew she would have to turn to God for comfort and strength.
During this time, she discovered the best way to hear from God was to meditate on Scripture and then write out what she believed was God’s prayer over her life. In so doing, she began to experience a renewed hope and a fresh faith.
The book is beautifully written with each day’s selection opening with a quote, followed by a prayer, and then ending with a Scripture. Each day is filled with encouragement, not platitudes or the answers to the hard questions of life. Each day brings the reminder of our God, who is with us in the midst of our difficulties and questions. It is He that holds our hand in every situation.
The author took liberty in writing the prayers as though they were coming from God’s voice. Her style is gentle and conveys a sense of awe and reverence for God. Each reading infuses words of hope and blessing as coming from the very heart of God Himself.
No matter what life throws our way, we can be assured that God does indeed hold our hand and in fact, He will never let go of us. Not one single day of our lives.
“I saw that my hand was in another hand. That hand was pierced … it was Jesus’ hand. I never before understood what surrender meant – our weak hand in Jesus’ strong hand! His strength in our life! Surrender to the Lord Jesus is dynamic and relaxed.”
~ Corrie Ten Boom, as quoted on page 24
