While taking our walk & then playing outside today, I taught Sophia the game, “With my little eyes, I see something”…….then a short description of what you are seeing & the other person has to try & guess what you are seeing. She caught on very quickly & LOVED it, especially when she was able to guess what I was “seeing”. Of course her percentage of correct guesses was very high as I made it relatively easy & sometimes even gave it to her if she came up with a good guess :)) Things were going well until she decided she wanted to be the one to say, “With my little eyes, I see something…….”. Her descriptions were….let’s say…..a little less that accurate, lol. She would give you the colors of several things that she was looking at & describe everything in her line of vision as if it were one thing. That makes it a little hard to narrow down or to give a correct answer. But she had fun for sure. But this got me to thinking today….

We need to be careful of what our eyes look at. As I thought about this today, this verse came to my mind….

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.   For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.” (1 John 2:15,16 NLT).

Did you catch that – “a craving for everything we see”.

A craving can be defined as ” a yearning, a longing, a hankering.” I like that last definition – a hankering. When was the last time any of us have used that word in a sentence??? But it is a great word to add insight into this discussion of cravings. A hankering is defined as “to have a restless or incessant longing; often associated with a weakness”.

OK, let’s think about this a little further – some of the reality shows that we so love on how to stage our homes, how to dress, how NOT to dress – they only develop in us a restless or incessant longing. We want what our eyes now see as better than what we have or deem “necessary”. We become dissatisfied with our current abode, our current closet, our current cars, etc.

See, we have taken the words, “the lust of the eyes” & given it a sexual connotation. Today I am challenged to wonder can it not mean ANYTHING that would entice me? Can it not also mean anything that would captivate me, maybe arouse in me a feeling of desire or greed? Perhaps an incessant, never giving up, never leaving me alone kind of longing. I think that it can surely mean that as well. I think our eyes can be taken in by what they see without counting the cost, without thinking about the real value of their desire.

Proverbs 27:20 says it so well for us...”Death & Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are the eyes of man.”

With that being said, I can’t help but hum an old song from Sunday School…

“Oh be careful little eyes what you see, oh be careful little eyes what you see. For the Father up above, is looking down in love. Oh be careful little eyes what you see.”
