Every once in a while I need to be reminded of a particular passage of Scripture. Today was one of those days. In the early morning hours, God brought the words “stone altar” to my mind.

With those words came the memories of going to China & so wanting to bring back a gift for every woman in my Bible Study at that time. There was only a few problems with that…the expense, the space in my suitcase & the weight of our suitcases as we were talking about 60 women total between the two studies. But God knew my heart….

When we got back, waiting at Dan’s office was a bag of river rock from the Yangtze River!!!

They were beautiful & seeing as we were in the middle of Beth Moore’s study, The Patriarchs, there was no more meaningful gift that I could give to each woman.

For months I had that river rock on my window sill as a reminder.

Stone altars.

In Joshua 4, there were 12 men, one from each tribe, that were told to take a stone from the middle of the Jordan River when the people were crossing. That stone was to serve as a sign so that when the children would ask about the stone, they would be told of how God made a way for them to cross.

“These stones are to be a memorial to the people forever.” (Joshua 4:7 NIV).

So often we think we are building a memorial for God to be honored or revered. But looking at that verse has caused me to realize that it actually is for me. It is so I remember what God has done in my life. He desires that I remember His grace, His mercy, His protection, His provision. He does not want that I forget. Why?

So that I remember He is able to do it again. And again. And again.

It’s time for my river rock to be placed back on my window sill.
