Perhaps

I just read this quote by Mark Twain –

“The only person who likes change is a wet baby.”

How great is that!!!!

Seeing as I have not been in diapers in MANY years (& actually, I hope I will not be back in them for MANY years!!!!! LOLOL), I feel “normal”. Reading this quote makes me wonder if God has not wired us exactly this way. Perhaps each of us longs for stability, longs for things to stay the same, longs for the peace & tranquility that sameness brings. Perhaps that is the way God designed for it to be.

Perhaps when He created the Garden in all of its beauty, creativity & wonder, He intended for it to remain that way. Perhaps that is why Scripture tells us that:

  • creation waits in eager expectation
  • creation was subjected to frustration not by its own choice
  • creation hopes to be liberated from its bondage to decay
  • the whole creation has been groaning right up to the present time

(see Romans 8:18-22).

Perhaps when God created man, He created us to be with Him forever. Perhaps that is why He has written eternity on our hearts & we long for Him (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

This morning I am wondering if perhaps God’s design for sameness was intended to point us to the fact that everything changes BUT GOD. His unchanging character is intended to bring us to the place of security, of safety, of trust. His Word assures us over & over of this truth:

  • “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19 NIV).
  • “But you remain the same, and your years will never end” (Psalm 102:27 NIV).
  •  ”He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind.”(1 Samuel 15:29 NIV).
  • “I the Lord do not change.” (Malachi 3:6 NIV).

Jud Wilhite in his book, “Uncensored Truth” explains it ….

“This wonderful truth about God applies to every one of his other characteristics. He will always be present. He will never be without power. He will always be good. He will always love you in Christ. His majesty & glory will never cease. His grace & truth will always be available. He will never lose control. Everything changes….except God!”   (page 29).

Yes, perhaps we have been designed to desire sameness, consistency, regularity, stability. In a changing world, we find that only in our unchanging God.
