All month I have been enjoying Christmas music and the memories that many of them bring to mind. It is hard for me to believe all of the children’s songs that flood my memories. More amazing to me is that many of those memories go back to my own childhood.

We looked forward to the weekly “Alvin and the Chipmunks: show. I am not sure if it was us or our Dad who enjoyed the program more. I do know … watching it with Dad made the Chipmunks and their antics even funnier, for Dad enjoyed them more than we did. Their Christmas special was enjoyed for many a year. So it came as no surprise to anyone when, years ago,  I bought the Chipmunks Christmas record (yes, record as in vinyl) . This year as I have listened to my little rodent friends, this is what they taught me:

• Persistence. Alvin remained persistent in asking for a hula hoop for Christmas. He mentions it to Dave several times, insisting that “I still want a hula hoop”. Alvin was much like the widow who kept coming before the judge (found in Luke 18) with her request. Jesus taught this parable to illustrate that we should pray and never give up. We can come to God our Father, repeatedly, in prayer.
• We prefer on time to being late. Alvin keeps asking, “Please Christmas, don’t be late.” Scripture tells us, “But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem…” (Galatians 4:4, NIV). Other versions word it … “when the right time came”; “when the time arrived set by God the Father”; “but when the fullness of time had come”, “when the right time finally came”; “when the time had come to completion”. You get the picture. God had a time, appointed before the earth even was, in which He would send His Son to earth. The Good News, Himself, was dispatched to earth, in that very moment. And no sooner.

And so, this Christmas, what is it you are waiting for? What are you, repeatedly praying for our God to do, to bring, to give, to change? Persist. Press on. Hold on.

For in the fullness of time, our God arrives.
