Have you ever wondered about the importance of prayer?
“Prayer is the difference between the best you can do and the best God can do.” (Mark Batterson, Draw the Circle, page 55)
Prayer reminds us of the limitations of our own resources. It also reminds us of the greatness of God and His sovereignty over all.
We know this with our minds and intellect but our eyes of faith tend to have short memories. How is it that we so quickly lose sight of Who God is? Psalm 145 reminds me that perpetual praise should be my focus each day.
Perpetual – as in – continuing on each day, throughout the day. Perpetual as in – NO interruption. Perpetual as in constantly blooming in my life.
When life tends to unfold and happen in living color, when emotions are high and seeking to take control, Psalm 145 tells us:
- “No one can measure his greatness”
- “proclaim his power”
- “meditate on his majestic, glorious splendor”
- “think on his wonderful miracles”
- let His “awe-inspiring deeds be on every tongue”
- “share the story of his wonderful goodness”
As we hit our knees in prayer, we admit our inability, our smallness and at the same time, we acknowledge His greatness and His ability to do all. It is in prayer that our faith grows and we find the assurance our God is bigger than any problem we may face.
And it is in praise that we give His Name the honor it deserves. His sovereignty is beyond human comprehension. His glory will fill us with wonder and assure us of His Presence with us, within us. His deeds and goodness will fill us with belief that He is great and able to handle those things which concern us.
Prayer is the difference,
and ….
prayer makes the difference.

“It is in prayer that our faith grows.” I love this quote as I’ve never thought of prayer doing that before (more of a by-product of it growing if that makes sense). Thanks for the encouragement to seek out continual prayer in my day with God.
It is amazing the overall effects prayer will have on our lives as we continually seek Him. He changes us & grows us in ways we’d never expect. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me!
Amen! “God is bigger than any problem we face.” Those words should be posted all over our houses, cars and written on cards and left in our purses, coat pockets and lunch boxes :). How easily we forget and try to take over solving our problems on our own!

I love that challenge, Joanne–to be in perpetual praise and prayer throughout the day. It’s easy to get distracted but I’ve been trying lately to just constantly remember He is near and He is helping. Thanks for another inspiring post, my friend!
Prayer can be a constant, ongoing conversation throughout our day. I am finding ongoing conversation helps me maintain my focus on Him. Always good to join you, Beth!
Oh yes, I love that encouragement to praise perpetually.
I don’t know whether you’ve ever heard the Amy Grant song “Better than a Hallelujah”? But I really don’t like it because she’s basically saying our honest, broken-hearted cries are better than hallelujah, but we can have both! We can be honest with God and we can praise Him at the same time, even in our pain.
Sarah, you are right! We CAN have both. And praying we do as there is no better place to go when we are in pain than to Him, who is able! Grateful you shared!
